The mayor of Colombia’s second largest city has imposed a ban on prostitution after an American tourist was caught with two girls aged 12 and 13.
Federico Gutiérrez, the mayor of Medellín, has imposed a six-month ban in the neighborhoods of Provenza and El Poblado. Those two are known for their trendy bars and clubs and are often visited by tourists. But over the years the neighborhoods have also become known to sex workers who go there in search of international clients. According to the mayor, criminal organizations are now also at work that exploit children and force them into prostitution. “We must regain control of this area,” he said. “It is also very important for us to protect the community.”
In Colombia, sex work is legal as long as it involves adults and is done with mutual consent. The law allows local authorities to impose a temporary ban if there is a danger to public order.
After an American man was recently found in a hotel room with two girls aged 12 and 13, the mayor decided to take measures. The 36-year-old American was held for 12 hours, but then had to be released so that the case could be further investigated. According to local media, the man has now fled to Florida. “It’s sad to see how many people think they can come to Medellín and do whatever they want,” the mayor said Monday.
