KWF uses grease poles and guest lessons against the harmful effects of the sun

The Netherlands has a number of sunny days ahead. That is a nice prospect for many people, but it is also a reason to pay extra attention to whether people are properly protecting themselves against the sun, warns KWF Cancer Control. The organization therefore finances various projects to ensure that people better protect themselves against the sun.

For example, excessive sun exposure can cause skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the Netherlands. Skin cancer is more common in coastal areas than elsewhere in the Netherlands, according to the Cancer Atlas drawn up last year by the Integrated Cancer Center of the Netherlands. There are a greater number of hours of sunshine and higher solar power.

“More research needs to be done into this, but these are the facts,” said KWF spokesperson Annebel Schipper. NOS Radio 1 News. In addition, people do not always have the right knowledge to optimally protect themselves against the influence of the sun. KWF Cancer Control wants to change that.

4.6 million euros

KWF Cancer Control has allocated 4.6 million euros to invest in eight regions. Some of that money goes to sunscreen dispensers. These ‘grease poles’ are placed in various places, such as beach tents, childcare locations and sports fields. The first dispenser will be installed in Noordwijk on May 17. Guest lectures are also given by dermatologists at a number of schools.

Many people know that sunscreen is important, but not, for example, that applying sunscreen once is often not enough. Our advice is: do that every two hours, says Schipper. “Friction or swimming will cause the sunscreen to come off.” The grease poles should also remind people of this.

Whether people buy an expensive or cheap sunscreen does not matter, says Schipper. “Always use factor 30, then you’ll be fine.”

Sunscreen is not the only tool that people can use to protect themselves from the sun. “UV-resistant clothing is also distributed to outdoor workers. It really is a diverse palette to protect people from the sun.”
