Wout van Aert and Remco Evenepoel are both looking at completing rehabilitation. A consequence of their falls that caused them to miss several classics.

During their recovery period, both visit LAB Antwerp, the physiotherapy practice that Thijs Hertsens co-founded and with which Van Aert and Evenepoel have been working for years. Now Thijs is again the man at their side and in The last news the physiotherapist explains how it all works.

“In the early days after the accident, I went to their home because they had difficulty moving. Even if they could not do much, it was still important to assess the nature of the injuries from my expertise,” says Hertsens in the newspaper about the very first steps in the zezing process.

“They both want to reach the level they were at at the time of their fall as quickly as possible. But everything takes time. Everything is done in consultation with the doctors at the hospital in Herentals, to whom I report every week. I report also to their teams”, he also has to think about the course.

“My job is to get them to the point where they can handle the endurance training and the heavier blocks on the bike again,” Hertsens explains his role. “These are very cycling-specific exercises that I give them.” That keeps them busy for a while. “Once they are injury-free, the teams’ coaches take over again.”
