Just when Anderlecht seemed to be freed from its (biggest) injury concerns, disaster strikes again. Around the half hour mark, captain Jan Vertonghen suffered a groin injury. The Red Devil first tried to continue playing, but had to leave a few minutes later. Trainer Brian Riemer provided an update afterwards: “I don’t know more than you do, but it is certainly not a major injury.”

Solid blow for Anderlecht in the Dudenpark.

Beforehand, coach Brian Riemer was able to convey the positive message that Anders Dreyer, Kasper Schmeichel and others are fit again, but after half an hour the Purple & White saw another strongman drop out.

And not the least.

Captain Jan Vertonghen suffered a groin injury during a sprint just before the half hour. The record international made some painful grimaces and immediately gestured to the bench that he needed care.

Afterwards, Vertonghen tried to continue playing, but that quickly proved impossible. The Red Devil limped to the side with a worried look.

Jan of course wanted to be on the field and lead the team. That’s why it was an emotional moment for him.

At the press conference afterwards, Riemer shared the (little) available information about his captain’s injury.

“I may know what you know,” said the Dane. “Jan left the field because he felt something, we didn’t want to take any risks. What and how bad exactly is it? That is very doubtful at the moment. It is certainly not a serious injury, we cherish hope. But it is never ideal if someone from the field has to be done. We’ll see later this week.”

Vertonghen appeared to be particularly affected by his substitution. Although, according to Riemer, this should not be magnified.

“We played a final today, right? Jan of course wanted to be on the field and lead the team. That’s why it was an emotional moment for him. But that was about what had happened, not about the future.”
