Canadian cycling champion Alison Jackson (EF Education-Cannondale) won the second stage of the Tour of Spain for women on Monday. After a chaotic final, she was the fastest in a peloton sprint. Hungarian champion Blanka Vas (Team SD Worx-Protime) finished second and took the red leader’s jersey.

After Sunday’s team time trial, the Vuelta Femenina continued with a mainly flat stage of 118 kilometers between Bunol and Moncofar. Belgian riders Valerie Demey and Audrey De Keersmaeker were part of an early breakaway of six, but they were caught on the only climb of the day. There, Marianne Vos’ teammates caused top favorite Charlotte Kool to get into trouble at a high pace.

The last three kilometers of the stage were shocked by two crashes, which shattered the peloton. After the chaos there was a peloton sprint, in which Jackson won ahead of Vas, the Dutch Karlijn Swinkels and the Polish Katarzyna Niewiadoma. That was the first victory of the season for Jackson, who couldn’t contain her joy after the finish. Last year, the 35-year-old Canadian achieved her greatest success with a win in Paris-Roubaix.

Thanks to the bonus seconds, Vas takes over the red leader’s jersey from the Italian Gaia Realini. The Tour of Spain for women continues until Sunday. Tomorrow/Tuesday a hilly stage of 130 kilometers awaits, which once again looks like it will end in a sprint by a thinned out peloton.
