Big news in cycling land on Tuesday evening: according to various Dutch media, Merijn Zeeman would be the new director of football club AZ Alkmaar next cycling season, where Belgian Maarten Martens is now trainer. The 45-year-old Dutchman was known as one of the architects of the great success of the cycling team of Wout van Aert and Jonas Vingegaard.
The Dutch news medium BNR first reported the news, which was later confirmed by the Dutch cycling website Wielerflits. Zeeman will therefore finish this cycling season with the Killer Bees and will only switch to the Alkmaarders at the end of the year, who themselves have other direct vacancies. The impending transfer has not yet been confirmed by Visma-Lease a Bike.
At BNR, Zeeman did not yet want to discuss a possible position at AZ. “There is no way to respond to that now,” he said. AZ would like to call on Robert van Overdijk, the current director of the Zandvoort Circuit, for the other management vacancy. Ajax is also said to be interested in the services of Van Overdijk to succeed the suspended Alex Kroes. The new CEO was accused of “very strong indications of insider trading”, the Amsterdammers reported earlier on Tuesday.
