The victim was found dead in his studio by the police on Friday morning, August 11, 2023. It quickly became clear that Brandon Dewulf (24) had been violently killed. His girlfriend had smelled trouble because she had not heard him for two days.

The murder hit Brandon’s friends and family very hard. “Brandon wouldn’t hurt a fly. He was a golden guy, despite his past. He was back on the right path and had stopped taking drugs,” his best friend previously testified in this newspaper. His girlfriend Kira was also devastated. “He was always there for me. I never asked him too much. Brandon never wanted to disappoint me. Also for my own 1.5 year old daughter, whom he treated like a child of his own. What else are we going to do without him?”

Three suspects were quickly jailed after the discovery of the body. Marco V. (23) had already gone to a lawyer and turned himself in to the police. Nigel D. (25) and Tyson S. (27) were then also arrested. The trio admitted that they exchanged blows, but denied that the intention was to take the life of their comrade. The suspects also claimed that the victim was still alive when they left him during Wednesday night. A conflict over drugs may have played a role in the facts, although the statements of the three differ widely.

The trio was initially arrested by the investigating judge on suspicion of manslaughter and culpable negligence. A week later, that qualification was expanded to include robbery and murder. The suspects allegedly grabbed the victim’s bicycle and several other items. A reconstruction of the facts was held on January 31, but it is not clear whether this also revealed new elements. On Tuesday morning, the three suspects appeared again before the council chamber in Bruges. He extended their detention by two months.
