Nightclub work ends in drama: at least 29 dead in explosion and fire in apartment building in Istanbul | Abroad

A major fire in an apartment building in Istanbul has killed at least 29 people. This is evident from a new balance sheet from the authorities on Tuesday. There is also one seriously injured person in hospital. The serious fire broke out during daytime work in a nightclub downstairs in the apartment building. At least eight seriously injured people were also initially reported. But most of them still died in hospital.

The fire broke out at 12:47 a.m. local time during work in the basement of the 16-story building in the Gayrettepe district, which housed a nightclub.

Explosion

Turkish media report that there was an explosion. The flames then spread to the apartments above the entertainment venue. The fire could only be contained after hours. In the meantime, the fire is under control. But the toll is very heavy.

An investigation has been opened into the cause and circumstances of the fire, the governor said. Authorities have since arrested five people, including a manager and the leader of the renovation.
