The Central American country had summoned Germany to the Court of Appeal in early March. The International Court of Justice is the highest legal body of the United Nations and handles disputes between countries.

According to Nicaragua, Germany is complicit in a “genocide” in the Gaza Strip and is doing too little to stop it, partly because Germany provides “political, financial and military support” to Israel. Nicaragua argued, among other things, that every country that signed the 1948 Genocide Convention “has a duty to do everything in its power to avoid a genocide.”

The case brought by Nicaragua was the second case before the International Court of Justice regarding the war in the Gaza Strip. South Africa previously filed a case against Israel. The Court of Appeal has already imposed measures on Israel in that case, including asking Israel to do everything it can to prevent a genocide.

According to human rights organizations, Israel is ignoring that ruling and is further increasing “the oppression of Palestinian civilians.”
