His workday was officially over. Reason enough for a Spanish driver to abandon his train halfway through the journey to its final destination and go home. Spanish media report this.
The train in question was on its way to León, a city in the north of Spain, last weekend. However, at a stopover in Sahagun, a village with a few thousand inhabitants, about sixty kilometers before the final destination, the driver announced that there was a delay due to a problem on the track. Then a striking message appeared on the screens in the train: “Our driver’s working day is over.” Apparently the man would not have thought better of simply going home, leaving behind the hundred or so passengers still on his train.
Hours of confusion, Renfe, the Spanish railway company, did not get any further than reporting that the stranded travelers would have to find alternative transport themselves. The driver reportedly had a significant delay earlier in the day, meaning his hours were already up. According to Renfe, the driver was therefore not allowed to continue driving. After criticism from the passengers, several buses were sent to take them to León.
