“It concerns a 24-year-old man from Lievegem,” says the police of the Deinze-Zulte-Lievegem zone in East Flanders. “Thanks to camera images from a local resident, images from the ANPR cameras and debris left on the track, we were able to identify the driver. We went to the young man’s home and he immediately confessed.”

The man in his twenties had fled the scene after an accident on March 12. At the Nekke, near the intersection with the Bauwerwaan in Zomergem, something went wrong and he collided with cyclist Jona Goderis (38). She was on her way to work.

Jona fell and, according to a witness, landed five meters away as a result of the impact. She suffered a serious knee fracture, a broken nose and several abrasions. “For the first few seconds I didn’t really realize what had happened. I was in shock,” she said. “Out of the corner of my eye I saw the BMW slowly driving away.”

Police court

Jona was taken to the AZ Alma in Eeklo, where the doctors immediately operated on her knee. She is now not allowed to lean on it for eight weeks and has to rest a lot. “It will be a long recovery,” she says. “I have to take it easy and follow physiotherapy.”

The 24-year-old driver will have to answer for the accident in the Ghent police court for hit-and-run.
