The incident happened around 5 p.m. “The young man had not yet gone into the water and collapsed at the edge of the wave pool,” says Ralph Scheffers, general manager of Center Parcs. “Because he was a heart patient and had a previous history, his friends immediately came to his aid. A doctor who was nearby began to resuscitate the young man together with his friends. The emergency services were also notified and arrived on the scene.”

An ambulance, mosquito doctor and the Lommel police rushed to the holiday park. The 16-year-old young man from Deinze in East Flanders was eventually taken to the Noorderhart Maria Hospital in Pelt in a critical condition.

“The swimming pool did not have to be evacuated due to the incident,” says Scheffers. “But we have sufficiently shielded the resuscitation from bystanders.”
