A 36-year-old man was arrested in the London suburb of Hainault on Tuesday after attacking people with a sword. A 14-year-old boy died and several people were injured.

Police were called at around 7 a.m. local time to a “serious incident” in Hainault, a residential area east of London. For example, there were reports that a vehicle had crashed into a house and that several people had been stabbed. Witnesses say they heard people screaming and saw the attacker carrying a “huge sword.” One person heard someone shout “she was stabbed in the face.”
When police arrived on the scene, the suspect also attacked two officers. 22 minutes after the call, the officers managed to give the man an electric shock with their stun gun and subsequently arrest him. “A man with a sword was arrested at the scene,” police said.
The entire neighborhood has been cordoned off and the Hainault metro station is closed indefinitely. According to the police, there is no terrorism involved in the incident. “Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident. There will be extra patrols in the area.”
One dead, four injured
Five people were taken to hospital. A 14-year-old boy died in hospital from his injuries. “The boy was taken to hospital after being stabbed and died a short time later,” said Chief Constable Stuart Bell.
The two police officers who were victims of the attack have “serious injuries” and will undergo surgery. The condition of the two other victims is not yet clear, although they are not said to be in life-threatening condition.

“Frightening incident”
“This incident shows the danger our police officers face every day, and I thank them for their courage,” said Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. The police officers “were well aware that this was a dangerous man,” but they “risked their own safety to ensure that others were not injured as a result of this man’s actions.”
“This must have been a terrifying incident for those involved. I know the community is shocked and worried,” said Deputy Commissioner Ade Adelekan. “People will want to know what happened and we will provide more information as soon as possible.”
