This makes it expensive and annoying, they would be better off just releasing a dumb switch. At least in my opinion.

It’s still a router, not a switch, so without a controller it’s still not a dumb switch. In addition, it depends on the use case whether or not you want a built-in controller. This device will also be in great demand among companies that set up networks at companies / SMEs. And they will prefer to have one controller that contains all customer environments. And for home use where you may want the controller integrated, you can choose from the UCG Ultra, UX, UDR, UDM, UDM Pro and UDM SE.
In addition, running additional software on the router also means that there is a (small) additional security risk.

And if you want 2.5Gbit/s (+) and a built-in controller and something “new”, perhaps there will also be a “real” 2.5Gbit/s variant of the UCG Ultra? After all, no one could have expected that the UXG Lite would now, 5 months after its introduction, also have a 2.5Gbit/s variant.

Plus Ubiquiti makes it unnecessarily complicated with the naming in my opinion. ‘XG’ always stood for 10G for me, and now this is a 2.5G device, which in my opinion should not carry the ‘XG’ name.

I think they introduced the X as a neXt-gen? The first/only “X” device to my knowledge was the “UXG”, UniFi neXt-gen Gateway. And in terms of hardware, that was a ripoff of the UDM Pro, only without an HDD tray and without “software” (no Network Controller, no Protect, no Access, no Talk, which can be used on the UDM Pro). And they only introduced UXG to cater to the business market because they wanted a standalone gateway (/router) that they could include in their own (management) environment/controller.
And with the UXG Lite that they introduced in November, they have of course already released something with “UXG” with no 10Gbit/s, because only 1Gbit/s.
