Russia claims to have captured 400 square kilometers in Ukraine since early 2024 | War Ukraine and Russia

Russia claims to have captured more than 400 square kilometers of territory in Ukraine since the beginning of the year. That corresponds to twice the area of the city of Antwerp. For comparison: the total area of Ukraine is more than 600,000 square kilometers.

“A total of 403 square kilometers of territories of new Russian regions have been placed under our control since the beginning of the year,” Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at a meeting with military commanders. He referred to the Ukrainian regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia. Russia claimed the annexation of those areas, but only partially controls them.

According to Shoigu, Russian troops continue to push Ukrainian soldiers back further west.

In recent months, the Russian army claimed the capture of several places. For example, the Russians took the eastern city of Avdijivka. However, the Russian soldiers failed to make a major breakthrough. Large parts of the front appear frozen.

Still, the Russians can take advantage of the difficulties facing the Ukrainian army. The Ukrainians don’t have enough ammunition and recruitment problems. In addition, Western aid is delayed.

The US Institute for the Study of War (ISW) estimated last week that Russia has captured 505 square kilometers of territory in Ukraine since October last year. According to the institute, the Ukrainians’ ability to conduct efficient defensive operations is limited by “material constraints.”

The institute emphasizes that the opportunities to expand Ukrainian vulnerabilities will continue to increase as long as the Ukrainian military faces weapons and personnel shortages.

Political divisions, both in Brussels and Washington, are delaying the aid Kiev is asking for. An envelope worth 60 billion dollars has been blocked in the US Congress for months.
