Prices for a rental car in Europe have fallen sharply in two years, according to a study by FerryGoGo, a travel guide for people who want to travel by ferry. Compared to 2019, there is still a price increase of almost 50 percent.
In the news: FerryGoGo’s analysis shows that the price tag of a small rental car in European cities has fallen from an average of 111 euros per day to 87 euros since 2022. That is a decrease of no less than 21.6 percent. “The cities included in the research are often popular holiday destinations, islands and/or port cities, accessible by ferry,” explains Jan Willem van Tilburg, spokesperson for the travel guide.
- Nowhere have rental prices fallen as sharply as in Ireland. Over the past two years, they have fallen by an average of 60 percent. In Dublin today you can rent a car for 66 euros per day, while two years ago it was 184 euros.
- In Spain – a popular travel destination for Belgians – the average price of a rental car has fallen by 40 percent compared to 2022. Today you can drive through the southern country by car for an average of 61.4 euros per day.
- In French cities, the price fell by about 17.1 percent compared to 2022. With our southern neighbors you now pay an average of 89 euros per day.
- In the United Kingdom, FerryGoGo recorded a decrease of 17.9 percent compared to 2022. Today you can rent a small car in British cities for an average of 94.5 euros per day.
Rental cars are not cheaper in all countries
But: In some countries, prices have risen over the past two years.
- In Norway today you pay an average of 21.9 percent more for a rental car. A day will cost you 137 euros. In no other country in Europe (that FerryGoGo examined) do you have to pay more money to rent a car.
- The same goes for Germany. The price tag of a rental car in our eastern neighbors has increased by 24 percent since 2022 to 84.8 euros per day.
Footnote: Van Tilburg adds that there has been a significant increase in daily prices compared to 2019.
- The average price of a European rental car has increased by 48.9 percent over the past five years.
- Germany is an exception. In that country you pay 9.8 percent less for a rental car than in 2019.
Tip: Van Tilburg notes that you can reduce the price if you rent a car for several days.
