TAIPEI: Taiwan on Tuesday said that soldiers stationed on one of its small frontline islands near China’s mainland are on high alert due to recent provocations by Chinese civilian drones.

Beijing asserts its claim over Taiwan and has not ruled out the use of force to assert control over the self-governing island.

Apart from the regular military presence of Chinese warplanes and vessels near the island, Taiwan is now facing intrusions from civilian drones that conduct surveillance and cause disturbances to its troops.

In response to the escalating drone activities by Chinese individuals, Taiwan’s military has instructed soldiers on Erdan island to heighten their surveillance and vigilance.

Erdan island, located just five kilometers from the Chinese coast, is part of Taiwan’s Kinmen Island chain. The Kinmen Defense Command has announced plans to enhance soldiers’ training in drone handling and implementing appropriate countermeasures based on the level of threat posed.

This development follows the circulation of a video on YouTube last week allegedly showing drone footage of soldiers and military installations on Erdan island.

The video was accompanied by a caption claiming that Taiwanese soldiers were being intimidated by a Chinese drone.
