I have actually been expecting the collapse of major publishers for years.

Just in context, Take Two had 11,580 employees in 2023, of which 70 are now being laid off somewhere around half a percent… They are aiming for ~580 layoffs in total… Even more context: Take Two had 5,214 before the pandemic (2019). pieces of staff…

Take Two also worked well in 2019, even after those 5% layoffs, they still have more than twice as many staff than in 2019… So they can still chop just fine!

Take Two = Rockstar => GTA V, Red Dead Redemtion 2, GTA VI next year. All ‘live-service’ games that earn extremely well for Rockstar and therefore Take Two… And we’re not even going to talk about 2k…

The developer behind Kerbal Space Program 2 is not the same as behind Kerbal Space Program #1. At first Star Theory Games (formerly Uber Entertainment, maker of Planetary Annihilation) was going to make this, but later Private Division set up a new studio (with many of the Star Theory Games staff) and after 5-6 years of development that just turns out to be the case. not to be a winning combination. And they have now closed that studio (Intercept Games).

Intercept Games => Star Theory Games => Uber Entertainment is known to me from Planetary Annihilation, I backed the kickstarter and it looked like a very nice studio/people. BUT… The ‘prototype’ movie was nothing like what they ultimately delivered, which is certainly cool, but still disappointing in some ways. And that really hurt them with their second ks Human Resources, which looked really cool in terms of art and gameplay, but it never achieved its goal. After that, things went seriously downhill for Uber Entertainment and if I’m completely honest, I’m not surprised that they can’t create a decent sequel to KSP. I don’t find it very strange that Take Two has now pulled the plug on this in these times.
