Anna Drijver will be on stage later this year in her very first solo performance. With the piece Mary’s men the actress will travel to almost sixty Dutch theaters from November. The piece is based on the book of the same name by Anneloes Timmerije. This is about Maria van Aelst, a woman who was married off in the seventeenth century, but then chose her own path and made exceptional choices in her search for the right to exist and freedom.

“The men from the seventeenth century have been praised as the great heroes of our country for about 350 years. Only in recent decades has there been room for nuance and criticism of the atrocities committed by them and the system of oppression that they rolled out across large parts of the world. I never read about female ‘heroes’ until Maria van Aelst,” says Drijver. “There are no 350 years of ‘heroism’ attached to her and we can immediately take a broad view.”

Drijver asked Maxine Palit de Jongh to adapt Timmerije’s novel into a monologue. Playwright Palit de Jongh previously created the play text Vecht (Likeminds, 2022), about the benefits scandal. Olivier Diepenhorst is directing. He delved into the country’s colonial history several times and previously created the performances Lichter dan ik and Gelukzoekers op Sumatra.
