There will be no automatic fix for Windows 10 security update KB5034441. The update has a bug where many users’ recovery partition is not large enough to install the update. That problem can only be solved manually, Microsoft says.

Users whose recovery partition is not large enough will see the error code 0x80070643 ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE. According to Microsoft, 250MB of free space on the recovery partition is required to successfully install the patch, but some users say the installation fails even with more free space.

Microsoft promised in January that a fix would be released for the problem. Now, however, the company says that an automatic fix will not be available with a future Windows update, Neowin reports. The only way to solve the problem is to manually extend WinRE partition. This can now also be done automatically with two PowerShell scripts. There are risks associated with manually expanding the WinRE partition and it is even possible that the PC will no longer start at all.

It is unclear whether the problem on Windows 11 will receive an update that solves the problem. According to Neowin, the bug is still open there.
