Such a useful anecdote.

Here Windows works out of the box and I have had problems several times with Linux and all the fragmented ‘solutions’ associated with it. In fact, when switching motherboard and CPU (from Intel to AMD) I did not have any issues with my Windows installation that I would have expected in the past.

Nowadays Windows may continue to work if you change CPU/motherboard, but it does become a mess. SxS folder therefore takes up an unnecessary amount of extra storage space. “Rolling back” to an earlier situation, that is an option for “the weak”, in any operating system by the way, not just Windows.

Anyway, back to the point:
Of course, there are hardware combinations that work well in one operating system and not in others. Even now in 2024. Since I have been assembling computers for more than 25 years, I have never been the owner of such combinations, because I invest time in research. And this is especially the case with laptops, where you have almost no say in the components used, where problems with Linux may occur.

However, I should note that since I no longer have to shop around for the cheapest laptop segment, Linux also works well on such laptops. Lenovo laptops from the last 10 years or so work great almost immediately with distributions such as Mint, Pop!_OS, Ubuntu, without any fiddling with the terminal.

Dell, also good experiences with that, but more with Dell’s until about 5 years ago. HP, that’s a lot less. In practice you rarely encounter other brands here. Anyway, that’s my n==1.
