The Dutch-Jewish writer Etty Hillesum, who kept a diary during the Second World War, becomes the subject of a major international drama series. The recording of the six-part drama ‘The Girl Who Learned How To Kneel’ will take place in Amsterdam next autumn. Producer Topkapi Films reported this on Thursday.

As a 27-year-old student in Amsterdam, Etty wrote a diary that shows a deep and indestructible faith in humanity. While her freedom and life were threatened by the war and everything around her was full of hatred, the author continued to believe in the beauty of life and the power of man. Ultimately, Etty voluntarily left for Westerbork camp to assist people there, until she was deported to Auschwitz herself in 1943. She was murdered there. Her collected diaries were not published until four decades later. The disturbed lifeas the collection is called, was published in more than twenty countries.

The series should be broadcast on television in 2026. Casting will be announced later. The Girl Who Learned How To Kneel is a production of Les Films du Poisson in co-production with Topkapi Films, the German Komplizen Film and the Italian Quiddity. Topkapi was previously involved as co-producer in international success films such as the Oscar-winning one Busy by Thomas Vinterberg and Close by Lukas Dhont.
