The Cameroon Football Association reacts with “great surprise” to the appointment of Marc Brys as the new national coach: “A unilateral decision”

The Cameroon Football Association has reacted with surprise to the appointment of Marc Brys as the new coach of the national team. The Cameroonian Minister of Sports announced on national television on Tuesday that Brys will succeed Rigobert Song. His contract expired in February and was not extended after a disappointing Africa Cup.

In a press release on Wednesday, the federation expressed “great surprise” about the procedure followed to appoint Brys. According to the association, no agreement had been made about the appointment of a new trainer.

“The Cameroon Football Association has taken note, at the same time as the Cameroonians, of the appointment to positions of responsibility of the men’s national team. Fecafoot expresses its great surprise at this act, which is contrary to the provisions of Decree No. 2014/384 of 26 September 2014 on the organization and operation of national football teams,” said a statement.

“This unilateral decision comes at a time when Fecafoot has agreed to carry out the very high instructions of the President of the Republic by providing its frank cooperation with a view to achieving a reconciliation favorable to the future of our beloved Indomitable Lions. Fecafoot intends to provide clarification on this unfortunate situation and will provide a response as soon as possible.”

During the African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, Cameroon was eliminated by Nigeria in the eighth finals. The goal for Song was to reach the semi-finals. Marc Brys is the third Belgian coach of Cameroon after Henri Depireux (1996-1997) and Hugo Broos (2016-2017). The latter led the country to victory in the African Cup of Nations in 2017.
