A motorcyclist died in a traffic accident on the Stadium Viaduct in Rotterdam-Vreewijk on Tuesday morning at 8:10 am. It concerns a 22-year-old man from Rotterdam.
The engine caught fire after the accident and was extinguished shortly afterwards by the emergency services. A van was involved in the accident. The police are talking about an accident involving ‘multiple vehicles’. The trauma helicopter also arrived on the scene to assist the motorcyclist. That was ultimately of no use.
It is not yet known how the accident could happen. The police will conduct an investigation.
Several accidents involving motorcyclists
An hour earlier, an accident also occurred with a motorcyclist about two kilometers away. That accident took place on the Spinozaweg, near the Pascalweg in Rotterdam-Lombardijen at 7 a.m. The driver of the motorcycle was injured and taken to hospital by emergency services. Here too, the trauma helicopter arrived on site to provide assistance to the injured motorcyclist.
It is the third serious traffic accident this week involving a motorcyclist. Last Friday, a 59-year-old motorcyclist died in Vlaardingen after a single-vehicle accident on the Galgkade.
Danger for motorcyclists
Last June, three accidents involving motorcyclists also occurred in the Rotterdam region. Two of these were fatal. The risk of dying for motorcyclists in a traffic accident is thirty times higher than for a car occupant.
Research shows that 70 percent of motorists say ‘sorry, I didn’t see you’ after a collision with a motorcyclist. Due to inattention or because the engine was in the blind spot of the car.
