After the draw against Wolves, Vincent Kompany again expressed his frustrations with the ref. He was particularly unhappy about the alleged error that led to the equalizer: “There was no contact”.
“Let’s not talk about the referees again,” Kompany started, after which he changed tack. “If it is really necessary: of course it is a problem. If you’re doing a pirouette and you fall without contact, we can all be honest and say it’s not a mistake.” Frustrations with the match management were high again after the match at Kompany.
The phase in question is the mistake that led to the free kick from which Rayan Ait-Nouri’s equalizer fell. “The ref was in the perfect position. I was three times further away and even saw that nothing was wrong.” An uppercut just before the break after Burnley had taken the lead through Jacob Bruun-Larsen (ex-Anderlecht).
Yet Kompany realizes that defending free kicks needs to be improved: “When I look at my own team and how we defend in standard situations, the problem keeps repeating itself and that doesn’t make it any easier.”
In the second half, Kompany’s men encountered Wolves goalkeeper Sa a number of times. The quality in the zone of truth was lacking. The Clarets forgot to reward themselves for their good game. After the match, Kompany was satisfied with the progress of his players: “I can only praise my team. They played like a real Premier League team.”
Also a final sneer at the refs: “Maybe we deserve to be a little higher, without their many bad decisions.”
With seven games to go, Vincent Kompany’s Burnley still has some hope of salvation. Burnley has now been undefeated for four matches in a row.
Kompany was in the dugout on Tuesday despite a red card against Chelsea. He won’t serve his suspension day until next weekend.
Of his Belgians, only Benson got minutes. Delcroix remained on the bench. Trésor and Al-Dakhil were not in the core.
Burnley remains nineteenth. The number 17, Nottingham Forest, did win (3-1 against Fulham).
