KRC Genk recently saw top talent Ilyes Bennane leave. He will now play football for Anderlecht. The 13-year-old is known as the biggest talent in the country, but at Genk the bridges were burned: “No one is above the club.”

Sports director Dimitri De Condé explains why things went wrong at Genk. “The problem was in the entourage,” said Dimitri de Condé The newspapaer. “The parents criticized fellow players, parents, the club, the trainers.”

De Condé himself involved himself in the file and entered into discussions with the parents. “But even then there was no improvement,” said the sporting director. “Then we pulled the plug in consultation with the youth.”

“The values and standards that our club stands for and our way of working were unfortunately no longer compatible with the expectations of the Ilyes entourage.”

“There are few players that we as a club have invested as much time and energy in as Ilyes, but at the end of the day at KRC Genk no one is above the club. At a certain point you have to draw the line and say so far and no further.”

Bennane joins Anderlecht’s U15 squad, with whom he will also play matches from next season. It is a prestige move for Anderlecht, because many top European clubs also wanted him. Club Brugge also showed interest, but did not participate in the game.
