Wout Van Aert underwent successful surgery today in Herentals hospital. His Visma-Lease a Bike team announced this on Thursday afternoon. “On behalf of Wout, we would like to thank everyone for the support,” it said.

Wout van Aert went under the knife today in the hospital in Herentals. That operation went well, Visma-Lease a Bike said on Thursday.

“Examinations showed that he had a broken sternum, a broken collarbone and several broken ribs,” the Dutch team said.

“It is unclear for the time being when Wout will be able to cycle again. The next few weeks will be dominated by his recovery.”

“He will miss the spring classics. His participation in the Giro is uncertain at the moment. We will make a decision about this in the coming weeks, based on his recovery.”

“On behalf of Wout, we would like to thank everyone for the support. Wout hopes to now be able to recuperate in peace.”
