In the Europe Play-offs, KV Mechelen continues to firmly embrace 2nd place after a clear victory against OH Leuven. The home team broke open the match after half-time and from then on had to undergo OHL.
KV Mechelen – OHL in a nutshell:
- Key moment: Russo misses a pass from Mrabti to Bassette. As a result, the KV Mechelen striker is only allowed to head towards OHL goalkeeper Leysen and mercilessly score the 2-0. In fifteen minutes, KV Mechelen thus knocked out OHL early in the second half.
- Man of the Match: KV Mechelen was supreme in the second half. It showed good football at times and owes this mainly to the experienced player in the person of Rob Schoofs. He shot his team into the lead with a shot and then guided his team to further increase the score.

Bassette’s goal less than fifteen minutes later showed the perseverance. After an OHL defender missed on Mrabti’s pass, the striker had a free path to goal and outwitted goalkeeper Leysen.
From minute 60 to the end of the match, OH Leuven played from pillar to post. Wonderful attacks, one-time football, heels, … Only a goal as a reward was missing for Schoofs, Hairemans and Mrabti.
Leuven did score. From offside. Although Brunes’ finish on Thorsteinsson’s cross was nice. Not 2-1.
Well 3-0. Banzuzi waved his arms too much in his own box and tapped Bassette. Penalty. After initially missing, Mrabti was allowed to have another chance because the Leuven team ran too eagerly into the rectangle.

- Yannick Thoelen (KV Mechelen): “I had to wait a long time for my match, but this is really cool. It’s all the better that I can keep a clean sheet. Our ball tempo was too slow in the first half, but we adjusted that at halftime and then we start playing football. Schoofs takes us along and the difference in level became clear. If we reach our level, we should not be afraid of anyone. After that it was important to stay sharp to keep a clean sheet and everyone wanted to keep it The crowd wanted me to kick the penalty, but that’s something for a last match or so…”
- Besnik Hasi (KVM trainer): “We had a hard time in the first half. We were sloppy and too slow. In the second half we brought more intensity and movement and then our qualities came to the fore. We were able to deepen the score more, but after the 2-0 the game was over. From then on we could play football more freely.”

One dominant half was enough for KV Mechelen to more than sufficiently distance themselves from OHL. Just two minutes after half-time, Schoofs shot the home team ahead with a shot. And when Russo made a mistake for a second time in the match, Bassette punished it mercilessly. Oud-Heverlee Leuven could no longer come under the pressure of KV Mechelen. In the end, Mrabti signed for the 3-0 final score after a retaken penalty. The post and Thoelen denied OHL a tying goal. Mrabti gratefully accepts his second chance and now convincingly scores the penalty! And so KV Mechelen is 3-0 ahead. Game over for OHL.

Penalty!
Banzuzi angrily punches the void. Van Driessche saw a foul on Bassette in the rectangle! His arms went too wide and in the spin he hit Bassette. And so KV Mechelen gets a penalty!
The audience calls for Thoelen to take it. But it is Mrabti who gets behind the ball.
