The Voice of Freya Van den Bossche: “Children of full-time working parents should be given priority in childcare” | The Voice of Flanders

In the Stem van Vlaanderen, Freya Van den Bossche wants to focus more on the results of students in education. “Well-being is incredibly important to me, but I think that school should above all be the place where children develop, where they learn and where they acquire knowledge and skills,” says Van den Bossche. “We see that Flanders drops year after year in every ranking in terms of school results. Our children are capable of much more than what our education can currently achieve,” Van den Bossche continues. “I think that a school should mainly focus on results, because it is not up to teachers to ensure the well-being of students. They must of course monitor the development of those students and we must ensure that students are doing well in other ways. We can do this, for example, by offering a free psychologist, but that is not the school’s job.”

Van den Bossche fully agrees with giving children of full-time working parents priority in childcare. “If you have a shortage of places, I think it is logical that those places first go to people who have to be at work, are in training or have no alternative available, then to people who can still care for their children at home for the time being” , Van den Bossche substantiates her answer, but there is also a downside to this, according to Van den Bossche. “It’s actually not okay that we have to make that choice. We want to strive to ensure that there is a place for every child in childcare, because it also benefits the development of those children.”
