Today the Giro d’Italia starts for the men, while the women now have the final weekend of the Vuelta Feminina. Demi Vollering seized power there on Thursday and seems to be on her way to final victory.

No saving mode

Of course, anything can happen in the last two stages, but the Dutch champion has proven to be the strongest in Spain so far. On Thursday she convincingly took the day’s victory, but on Friday she just had to leave it to the Frenchwoman Evita Muzic. Although there is a point to be made about this.

After all, Vollering had been dragging at the head of the group for miles. Little by little, other riders had to drop out, but as a result she seemed to spend a little too much unnecessary energy.

Transfer issues?

Because at the start of the climb the group was still quite large, and there were also a few teammates – including Marlen Reusser – from Vollering present. Nevertheless, she took matters into her own hands by imposing a grueling pace.

Dutch journalist Thijs Zonneveld, among others, questions this. “Pretty bizarre to see that Vollering has to do everything herself while there are teammates in the group,” was his clear conclusion on X. Vollering also rode away from her competitors for the general classification, but it was nevertheless remarkable.

As a result, she may have fallen short in the last hundreds of meters, or did she already give a present to her future teammate? After all, Muzic drives for FDJ-Suez, the team that Vollering would reportedly move to next season. Friday’s scenes also provide fodder for speculation about her current situation at SD Worx, where she will definitely leave.
