D’Haese drags the sensor back and forth several times to the statement to levy less taxes on labor, but more on consumption and capital. “Consumption and capital are taken together and I am 100 percent in favor of capital, but taxes on consumption are very unjust, like VAT today. Then low incomes pay proportionately much more, because they spend a much larger share on consumption. So no agreement for consumption, but yes for capital,” says D’Haese. Consumption tax also contains some pollution, but you have to be careful with that, says D’Haese. “It’s the same with the kilometer tax. If we make polluting things more expensive, you think people will suddenly find alternatives, while there is no public transport, for example. I don’t really believe in that, so we really have to see that there are enough alternatives.”

D’Haese clearly does not agree with the statement to limit the number of immigrants in Belgium. “That goes against all international rights. When people arrive here, we have to consider individually whether they have the right to stay. But setting a ceiling is simply not possible. What are we going to do if our ceiling is 1,000 and number 1,001 represents the limit? Build a wall or close the gate? That’s not possible.”
