According to Kadyrov Novaya Gazeta Europe suffer from pancreatic necrosis, a diagnosis that was allegedly made in January 2019. In this condition, parts of the pancreas die as a result of inflammation, which in more than 80 percent of cases is caused by alcoholism or bile duct diseases.

In September 2023, Ukrainian military intelligence reported that Kadyrov had been hospitalized in critical condition. Chechen sources then claimed that he was in a coma, and Russian military bloggers even claimed that Kadyrov had died. He also denied that rumor with a video.

Kadyrov has been the head of Chechnya, an autonomous republic of the Russian Federation, located in the North Caucasus, since 2007. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, his troops have been fighting alongside Russian soldiers in Ukraine. Kadyrov positions himself as a strong supporter of the conflict and has already called for the use of light nuclear weapons.
