Mexico City police have launched an investigation into a male suspect targeted as a possible serial killer after a search found a saw, blood, traces of human remains and identification cards of missing women in his rental home.

The search stemmed from a brutal attack on April 16 in which the suspect allegedly sexually assaulted and strangled a 17-year-old woman. Because the suspect lived near the scene of the crime, he could be quickly traced afterwards.

It is not yet clear how many women traces were found. Experts from the forensic laboratory are now trying to identify the human remains using DNA research. The suspect has since been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
