The employee of a mental health institution in Heerlen who was stabbed last week died from her injuries on Tuesday. The police reported this on Wednesday morning.

The incident took place last Monday around 12.15 pm. This happened in the Mondriaan mental health institution on John F. Kennedylaan in Heerlen.

The 39-year-old woman was then stabbed on the grounds of the institution. A short time later, the police arrested a 29-year-old woman from Heerlen as a suspect. All of the victim’s closest colleagues were taken care of, including people who had seen the incident happen.

There was a “treatment relationship” in the past between the victim and the suspect, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) reports. The suspect will appear in court on Thursday. After the death of the victim, she is no longer suspected of attempted murder or manslaughter, but of murder or manslaughter, the Public Prosecution Service says.

Mental health institution calls loss ‘a great void’

Mondriaan says that the death of the employee leaves “a big void” in the organization. “Our colleague was spontaneous, enthusiastic, driven and worked from her heart,” the mental health institution wrote in a statement. The woman had worked for Mondriaan for almost twenty years. “This loss affects us all deeply.”

The victim worked on a so-called ForFACT team. This is a program in which care providers from different disciplines work together in the treatment and guidance of clients. This includes, for example, psychiatrists, nurses and social workers. According to Mondriaan, the victim “put this treatment method on the map”.

The mental health sector association calls violence against care providers unacceptable. “Together with other parties such as the police, we are doing everything we can to prevent this. Care must be safe for our employees, patients and society,” says chairman Ruth Peetoom in a statement.

The chairman calls the fatal incident horrific. “Our condolences go out to her family, friends and acquaintances, but also to her colleagues,” she added.
