An unexpected new update is rolling out on a large number of Samsung phones. They will not get a new patch, but compatibility with 4G networks will be updated – and that is important. Here you can read which devices you can now update.

Second Samsung update in April: 4G-TDD support updated

At the end of March, the Galaxy S24, S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra were the first to receive the April security update. That was not a spectacular update – but the performance of the camera was further improved. Since then, almost all devices that should receive this month’s patch have also been updated. Nevertheless, a new update is rolling out today. And it’s readily available on quite a few phones.

You can now get started on:

The changelog on all devices is surprisingly consistent and clear this time. The ‘support for the regional 4G TDD frequency band type has been updated‘. Anyone who bought his or her device in Germany will soon no longer be able to use TDD 4G frequencies in a number of countries. We dare not say to what extent this is a concrete disadvantage. But because in Europe mainly FDD networks are used – and not TDD – we assume that the disadvantages remain within limits.

If anyone in the room knows exactly why Samsung is updating support for 4G TDD frequencies, and whether you might run into problems with a German device, please don’t hesitate to comment below.

It is not very clear why this update is suddenly being rolled out at a rapid pace. Sometimes these types of updates are related to security issues, the details of which will only be announced later. But that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case – we don’t want to speculate any further at this point.

Supplement: It seems that this update is necessary for phones to work properly with all available mobile frequencies on all mobile networks. For example, if you want to be able to call 112 in the future under all circumstances, your phone must be able to handle all available networks and frequencies. This update ensures that this remains possible.

Availability

The new update is now immediately available on the unbranded versions of the mentioned devices in the Netherlands, Belgium and the rest of Europe. If you don’t want to wait for your phone to find it itself, go via Institutions Unpleasant Software update and tap on it Download and install.

Have you received this update? Have you come across any other changes? Have you noticed any of the updated 4G support? Let us know below!
