Burgess gets a stupid red card after deliberately throwing a throw-in against Tolu’s head | Jupiler Pro League

After one matchday in the Champions’ Play-offs, Union has already lost its three-point lead over Anderlecht. And that caused disappointment among the people of Brussels. In the final minute the frustration rose to a boiling point. Central defender Christian Burgess threw a throw-in hard against Tolu’s head and was shown a red card.

Racing Genk defended a 1-0 lead against Union in the final phase. The game took place for several minutes at the corner flag, where the Limburgers gained a lot of time. That caused frustration at Union. And especially with Burgess. During a throw-in for Union, the Englishman threw the ball hard from close range against Tolu’s head. Referee Laforge was unrelenting and gave Burgess a red card.

His coach, Blessin, responded. “Oh… what can I say? He talked to the ref a lot before that, too much. I always defend my players, but this was clearly not a good phase. At the time I was too far away from it, but after seeing the replay… you can give red, yes. Whether Burgess was too nervous? No. I’m not going to criticize him here. We will discuss this internally.”

“Everyone has seen that Burgess deliberately throws the ball at Tolu,” teammate Castro-Montes said in front of the microphone of Eleven/DAZN. “But I think a red card is very strict. Maybe the ref was guided by his emotions. The fourth ref said that the VAR checked the phase and also found it red.”

The victim – Tolu – also told the story. “I was surprised and didn’t even really feel it. Some other guys then go down and act like they’re in a lot of pain. That might be smarter. I was especially shocked that he threw that ball. It’s good that the ref saw it and that he (Burgess, ed.) got what he deserved. I don’t know why he did that, maybe he was frustrated.”
