Former Brazilian football star Robinho was arrested yesterday in Santos, the Brazilian city where he lives, to serve his 9-year prison sentence. He received it in Italy in 2017 for his participation in a gang rape in 2013, while he played for Milan.

Robinho is currently 40 years old. As a teenager, he moved to Europe in 2005, more specifically Real Madrid. After a spell at Manchester City, the attacker played at Milan from 2010 to 2015.

In January 2013, he was involved in the gang rape of a 22-year-old Albanian woman in a nightclub in Milan. Robinho always denied the accusations, but in 2017 he was sentenced in absentia to 9 years in prison in Milan.

Robinho, who had since moved back to his home country, exhausted all appeal options: the sentence was confirmed on appeal and also definitively by the Italian Court of Cassation in January 2022.

Italy submitted an extradition request in February 2022. But because the Brazilian constitution prohibits the extradition of its citizens, the competent court considered whether the former striker should serve his sentence in Brazil. Nine judges voted in favor on Wednesday, two were against.

Earlier Thursday, the Brazilian Supreme Court rejected further proceedings by Robinho who wanted to temporarily avoid his prison sentence. He blames the conviction on racism from the Italian side.
