Studio Warner Bros. is working on a fifth The Matrixfilm, American media report. The project is led by director Drew Goddard. The filmmaker previously wrote the screenplays for critically acclaimed films such as TheMartian and The Cabin in the Woods.
It will be the first Matrixfilm that is not directed by Lana or Lilly Wachowski. Lana Wachowski, who directed the fourth part, is involved in the project as an executive producer. Goddard not only directs, but also writes the script together with colleague Sarah Esberg.
“I am not exaggerating when I say that the Matrixfilms have changed both the film world and my life,” says Goddard. “Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me every day. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to tell stories in their world.”
Goddard was nominated for an Oscar for writing TheMartian. He also wrote Cloverfield and world War Z and was writer and director of The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale.
It is not yet clear whether actors Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving, who appeared in the previous films, will return. It is also not yet clear where The Matrix 5 is exactly about. The film studio does say that the story “continues in this world of fantasy, without deviating too far from what made the film series such a success”.
Film series grossed $2 billion worldwide
In the Matrixfilms, a software programmer (Keanu Reeves) discovers that he lives in an alternate world. The first film is considered a milestone in film history due to the revolutionary new techniques used for the action scenes.
Then came three sequels. The series was extremely successful. In total, the films grossed around 2 billion dollars (1.8 billion euros) worldwide.
