Marianne Vos (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) won the third stage of the Tour of Spain for women on Tuesday. In a peloton sprint, the 36-year-old Dutch woman was clearly faster than compatriot Charlotte Kool, good for her fourth victory of the season.

Due to the consequences of Monday’s crashes, several riders disappeared from the Vuelta on Tuesday. This includes the Danish sprinter Emma Norsgaard, the Italian classification rider Marta Cavalli and the British Anna Henderson, a teammate of Vos.

The hilly third stage over 130 kilometers between Lucena del Cid and Teruel had a monotonous race story. The Spanish Mireia Benito of the Belgian AG Insurance-Soudal rode alone in the lead from the start until seven kilometers before the finish. Then an extended platoon joined up again.

A crash in the last three kilometers, including the Dutch Thalita de Jong, split the peloton just before the sprint, just like on Monday. Top favorites Charlotte Kool and Marianne Vos, however, were not surprised, after which Vos threw the competition out of the wheel in a slightly ascending sprint and won with a very large lead, ahead of Kool and the Canadian Olivia Baril.

At the top of the general classification, the Hungarian Blanka Vas (Team SD Worx – Protime) remains in the lead. The Vuelta Femenina lasts until Sunday. Wednesday’s stage is mainly on a downward slope, and after 142 kilometers it appears to end in a bunch sprint in the arrival town of Zaragoza.
