In Ghent, the Tire Extinguishers action group once again flattened the tires of a large number of SUVs in the night from Wednesday to Thursday. They say they have their reasons for this, which are listed in a poster. “You can walk, cycle or use public transport.”
The police received about 15 reports of flat tires near Ekkergem and De Coupure on Thursday. Mainly residents of Lieven de Winnestraat, Wispelbergstraat and Ekkergemstraat were the victims. A poster is always left on the targeted SUVs. “Driving in urban areas in a very large vehicle has enormous negative consequences for others,” it reads.
“SUVs cause more air pollution than smaller cars and are more likely than normal cars to have accidents that kill people. Independent studies show that SUV drivers take more risks. SUVs are unnecessary and just for showing off. Hybrid and electric SUVs also leave a large carbon footprint and are equally dangerous. In Belgium you will have no trouble getting around without an SUV. You can walk, cycle or use public transport.”
Kinepolis
It is not the first time that the group has taken action in Ghent. Two months ago they struck near the Kinepolis. In October they flattened the tires of 55 all-terrain vehicles. In May and March of last year they also struck the East Flemish capital. The activists also targeted cities in the Netherlands, Germany, England, Latvia, Norway, Switzerland, France, the Czech Republic and Canada.
