After the case went viral on TikTok, ‘Fabel Friet’ is growing in popularity in Amsterdam. The small chip shop opened their doors during the corona period, about four years ago. They attract many curious people with toppings such as Parmesan cheese, truffle mayonnaise or cheddar. Although that also immediately causes long queues in front of their door. The city therefore now wants only ten people who have ordered to be allowed in the queue.
Chip shop ‘Fabel Friet’ has already provided crowd managers to keep the queue on track. But the complaints from local residents persist: at least 77 people living around Fabel Friet say they experience nuisance. The city of Amsterdam therefore imposed an additional rule on the business: a limitation on the number of customers in the queue. If there are more people interested, ‘Fabel Friet’ must close the second cash register, so that fewer sales are made. They do not impose any restrictions on the queue of people who still have to order.
But that is against the wishes of the owners of the chip shop. According to the lawyer of ‘Fabel Friet’, it is “clear that, regardless of the client’s operations, it is busy in the center of Amsterdam”. However, according to her, Fabel Friet has “taken many measures to prevent nuisance”. The company calls the rule unworkable and wants the court to intervene. The written decision will follow in two weeks.
