ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has submitted a document to the European Commission on the risks to minors when using TikTok Lite. Earlier this week, Brussels issued an ultimatum to the social media company due to the potentially addictive effect of TikTok Lite. The commission also threatened a fine and a possible ban on a rewards application in the app.

TikTok had to inform the committee within 24 hours about the analysis that the Chinese internet company had carried out into addiction risks. ByteDance reports that the document was submitted before the deadline expired.

However, the case is not yet concluded. This order is a first step in a process to determine whether TikTok violates the European Digital Services Act, the Digital Services Act (DSA). In addition, TikTok was given 48 hours by Brussels to defend itself against a provisional ban on part of the app.

So far in the EU, TikTok Lite has only been released in France and Spain. According to the developers, the app is intended for users with limited data or who connect to 2G or 3G networks. The European Commission is particularly concerned about the app component where users receive vouchers or gifts as they complete assignments and therefore stay online longer. That can be addictive, is the committee’s preliminary conclusion.
