ANTWERP – Since 1984, student clubs have been competing in sports during the Go-Kart Race of UAntwerp. Today the fun/dead serious competition celebrated its 40th anniversary.

The Go-Kart Race is one of the traditional highlights of student life on the Groenenborger, Middelheim and Drie Eiken campuses of the University of Antwerp.

The event was organized for years by ASK-Stuwer, the umbrella student association and the associations that were active under this umbrella.

After persistent problems, the university recently decided to release ASK-Stuwer from its responsibilities as an umbrella association.

However, that does not mean that the Go-Kart Race was removed from the calendar, on the contrary. Student Sam Pieters of the organization: ‘The fourteen student clubs that are members of the circle council are all putting their weight behind it.’

‘Fortunately we get along well with each other. After Opening Day at the start of the academic year, this race is just about the most important event for our students.’

‘We didn’t have much time to get everything organised, but with the help of all the clubs and the support of the university we made it happen.’

And so the paths on Campus Middelheim functioned as a race circuit for another afternoon.

All student clubs sent a decorated go-kart onto the track. They competed for sporting honors in two heats, loudly encouraged by the cheerleaders from their own club.

There were prizes for the fastest go-kart, for the best decorated carriage and for the most enthusiastic cheerleaders.

Pieters: ‘Like every year, no lessons were given this afternoon on the three life sciences campuses where the prospective scientists and technologists study.’

‘Before, during and after the match, the participating clubs provided an extensive catering offering.’ (EM / Photo University of Antwerp)
