The Red Devils’ weak first half was (briefly) shaken up on the half hour. Arthur Vermeeren unfortunately got the ball against his hand in his own rectangle – and although the ball hit his body first – the referee still pointed to the spot. Still, Matz Sels would let justice prevail with a save. Review the phase below.

“Two weeks ago we played against Brighton,” the Nottingham Forest goalkeeper said of his penalty save.

Matz Sels had done his homework for that Premier League match. He had therefore remembered which corner Evan Ferguson (Brighton) would target in his Irish jersey.

“I watched those images at the time and remembered that. I tried to mislead him by standing a bit in the corner where I thought he would kick.”

“I waited a long time and it worked. My save was early in the match and that always gives a boost to the team.”

Sels seized his opportunity in the absence of Koen Casteels. How does he view the Belgian pecking order?

“I try to show in every match that the coach can count on me. I can’t do more than that. We’ll see at the European Championship.”

“It’s important to be one team. I’m happy for myself, but the team is the most important.”
