As a youngster Dieter Coppens an avid hitchhiker. He thinks it’s a great way to get somewhere. This is how he is with his cousin Mathias Coppens once hitchhiked all the way from the South Pole to the North Pole.
He knows there are some scary stories going around, but during the entire trip he never felt uncomfortable. Once, when he hitchhiked from Zoersel to his room in Antwerp, he came across a wrong figure.
“A man stopped in a very small car. He was wearing a suit. I thought that was a very strange combination, on a Sunday evening.” Dieter asked the man what kind of work he did, but he stayed very superficial at first.
However, Dieter told so much about himself that he eventually decided to tell it. “He started to unbutton his shirt, and there were bags of drugs stuck to his body. He said: ‘I am the biggest drug courier in Belgium. I travel in a very small car, but I have something else at home, you know. .'”
The crazy thing is that the man dropped Dieter off at the police station in the City Park. “I knew where he was going, I had the license plate… But then I thought: no, I’m not going to do it, I told him where I live. So I just went home.”
