Nice theory, but I don’t agree with it.

Today you should take a look at lease constructions and see where a manufacturer makes the most money today. With such a lease construction, you have paid in full for the purchase price in 2 years for an appliance that can easily last 5+ years. However, in the following years you will continue to pay the manufacturer, because as soon as you stop paying they will come and collect the appliance and you will have you nothing more.

So you pay more for a device that manages to last its lifespan. Manufacturers should not increase quality at all, on the contrary, they could produce even cheaper because the failure rate may suddenly be higher, as long as it does not become too high. Because profits simply skyrocket for them in such a construction.

And you as a consumer are happy, because you know that you will receive a new device every x number of years. No longer purchasing and then using it until it is worn out, but always having a nice, recent device at home. That mountain of waste that we create in this way? Not my problem, because I always have a recent device at home that works.
