Unmotivated time credit – which, for example, allows you to travel the world – should be reintroduced for Groen. According to co-chairman Jeremie Vaneeckhout, it is a way to combat stress and burnout.
Groen wants to make workable work and the fight against burnouts a spearhead in the campaign. “We already have 500,000 long-term ill people, one in three of whom has depression or burnout. That costs more than 10 billion per year, a greater cost than unemployment. We have to turn that around,” says Vaneeckhout.
Groen therefore developed a plan against burnout and for workable work. Including a shorter working week for shortage professionals, the right to disconnect and telework for all employees, more prevention at work or a guaranteed salary in case of illness of three months instead of one month.
But the most striking proposal is the reintroduction of the unmotivated time credit, which the Michel government abolished in 2017. Since then, only motivated time credit is possible, such as for caring for a family member. It is no longer possible to interrupt your career for no reason to simply stay at home for a while or to make a long trip – and receive a monthly allowance from the RVA for this. Wrongly, say the greens. So they want to reintroduce it and allocate a compensation of 500 euros per month for it.
“People need to escape the rat race for once. That is not a cost, but an investment that will pay for itself in the long term. Let’s invest in people instead of squeezing them. We also want to debate the activation of long-term ill people, but the challenge is to provide workable work,” says Vaneeckhout. For Groen, it will be one of the most important themes in the campaign and a spearhead for government negotiations. (fem)
