Twenty Cambodian soldiers have been killed in an explosion at an ammunition cache at a military base in the west of the country. Prime Minister Hun Manet announced this.

The explosion occurred this afternoon at the military base in Kampong Speu province, Hun Manet said in a statement on Facebook. The Prime Minister did not provide any further details. He said he was “deeply shocked” and expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the victims. Several soldiers were also injured in the explosion. The cause is not yet known.

Images of the explosion can be seen on social media. A one-story building is destroyed and a cloud of smoke hangs around. Residents of a nearby village posted images of broken windows. The Prime Minister has instructed the Minister of Defense and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to arrange the funerals of the victims.
