Tijjani Babangida has been involved in a serious car accident. The former Ajax striker was seriously injured. His younger brother Ibrahim (ex-FC Volendam) did not survive the accident. The Nigerian Football Association reported this to various media from that country.

The tragedy occurred on the highway from Kaduna to Zaria. It is not known how the accident happened and who was driving the car. Tijjani Babangida is conscious and in critical but stable condition. His wife was also injured and admitted to a hospital in Zaria. Ibrahim Babangida did not survive.

Roda JC brought Tijjani Babangida (50) to the Eredivisie in 1991 and then stabled him at VVV-Venlo. His years in Limburg and the gold at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta earned the Nigerian a transfer to Ajax. In total, the winger would be under contract in Amsterdam for seven years. In between, Babangida also spent a year on loan for Vitesse.

Ibrahim Babangida also had a history in Dutch football. The midfielder, who is 47 years old, played for Volendam between 1997 and 2002. In total he played 36 matches for the Volendam team.
