A 16-year-old boy was shot dead by police in Perth, western Australia, on Saturday evening after he previously attacked an 18-year-old man with a knife. The police report this.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of a computer store in Willetton. The police were informed by the local Muslim community, who warned of someone who was going to commit violent acts. Minutes later, an emergency call came in from a man with a knife walking around the parking lot. There he stabbed an 18-year-old man in the back. He is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

The police rushed to the scene and asked the teenager to hand over his knife. CCTV footage shows him refusing to do so. They then tried to taser him, but that did not have the desired effect, according to police commissioner Col Blanch. “The man approached an officer with his knife. He fired a shot at him, which killed him.”

Radicalized

The police commissioner described the alleged attacker as a “white man.” He thanked members of the Muslim community who “had the courage to respond and express their concern that this individual was exhibiting disturbing behavior.” Blanch said community members alerted police after seeing the 16-year-old post something online.

Western Australia Prime Minister Roger Cook said there was evidence the 16-year-old had been “radicalized online”. Police Commissioner Blanch said the incident had “all the hallmarks of a terrorism-related attack” but he was unwilling to label it as such “at this stage”.
